On September 25th, 2000, Deb Lauman, owner and creator of SARpack, completed a 2,200-mile Appalachian Trail thru-hike. Deb had dreamed of the journey while earning her degree in Environmental Conservation from the University of New Hampshire, where she was a trip leader for the N.H. Outing Club and spent nearly every weekend backpacking in the nearby White and Green Mountains. Ten years later, she fulfilled that dream, summitting Mt. Katahdin, the final peak on the A.T., on her 178th day on the trail. Deb's hiking "resumé" also includes a trek in Wyoming's Wind River Range, a three-week backpacking trip on Minnesota's Kekekabic, Boundary Route and Superior Trails, Pennsylvania's Laurel Highlands Trail and multiple trips into the Grand Canyon near her current home in Flagstaff, Arizona. As a novel-writer who penned her first book while hiking the A.T., one of Deb's favorite sayings is "Hiking a trail frees my mind to wander." Visit her "Hiking Writer" website to read trail journals and articles and find out more about her novel at DebraLauman.com.

SARpack's director of marketing, Deb Lauman, became a Search & Rescue volunteer in September, 2007, putting in hundreds of mission hours and numerous training sessions since then and seeing firsthand what being unprepared in the backcountry can lead to. She finds participating with SAR--assisting lost and injured hikers, skiers, hunters, climbers and other outdoor enthusiasts--to be one of the most rewarding things she's ever done. You can read about Deb's SAR adventures on her blog, Deb's Search and Rescue Stories.

In the fall of 2008, Deb Lauman, SARpack's customer service representative, decided to combine her love of hiking and Search & Rescue, and her addiction to outdoor gear, with a business endeavor, creating pre-equipped packs for both recreational hikers as well as SAR personnel with 24-hour preparedness in mind. These packs, while intended for those who don't already have a full gear closet, are meant to include some of the basic items all backcountry travelers should have at their disposal (other than clothing, food, the water for the water bottles and, of course, their own common sense) when setting out for a day-hike or SAR mission.

Oh, yes! And there's also Deb Lauman, webmaster extraordinaire for 24HourPack.com. Actually, she manages this site by the seat of her synthetic, convertible hiking pants, so hopefully things will run smoothly.
